With The Originals about to kick off its third season, it’s safe to say The Vampire Diaries already has one spinoff firmly in place on The CW’s current schedule. But with all the success the franchise has seen, is there potential for an additional one? Although no one at the network has issued any sort of official statement on the matter, the possibility isn’t being ruled out according to Julie Plec.
During a recent interview with Digital Spy, the executive producer teased the idea of pursuing another TVD-related project. According to her, the Heretics — aka the ruthless villains of Season 7 — are as captivating and formidable as the Mikaelsons; and their storylines are just as rich, complicated, and compelling. “I look at the casting of the Heretics and I think, ‘Oh, they’re interesting – could they be their own show?’ – so it’s one of those [where] we’ll see,” she explained.

You see, despite Lily Salvatore’s numerous attempts to keep her bloodthirsty pals on their best behavior, they refuse to obey their matriarch’s every command; these hungry, magic-siphoning vamps are very keen on stirring up trouble. “They’re mischievous and bored and cooped up for quite some time so Mystic Falls is sort of the brunt of the joke of the Heretics,” Julie told Zapt2It in July. “It’s a lot of fun and a little twisted.”
This all sounds great, but is Julie, who’s also overseeing the mid-season virus thriller Containment, eager to tack a new show onto her growing roster of hit series. “I don’t think I could actually do four shows – I’ll be very honest about that,” she confessed during her Q&A with Digital Spy.

Considering all the spoilers we’ve read about the Heretics thus far, we seriously can’t wait to see them in action when TVD Season 7 premieres on Thursday, October 8 at 8:00 p.m. on The CW. They sound positively wicked! Hopefully they live up to their scary reputation and present themselves as worthy opponents to our favorite Mystic Falls residents.
